Open Educational Resources (OER) have the potential to foster much-needed change in education including encouraging innovation and creating lifelong learners. The White House and Department of Education launched the #GoOpen campaign and announced several commitments to encourage OER adoption in schools. Major foundations such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation adopted policies to publish the work of their grantees under a Creative Commons license. Come join the discussion around using OER in adult education. Resources shared include where to find OER for your learners and online creation tools to create your own or modify someone else’s work. (It’s OK! They are licensed to allow modifications!) OER are not limited to educators. Learners also can create open educational resources to further their own learning. Bring your own device so you can explore on your own.

OTAN: EdReady Math and Welder Certification. EdReady is an online math curriculum that lets learners assess readiness for college math or career pathways, see study options, and set and follow a personalized study path to meet their own needs. This session shows how a group of kinesthetic learners seeking a welding certificate, but deficient in reading and math, took a pre-assessment for welding math requirements and created a personalized learning path to ensure they passed the required math concepts for welding. One hundred percent met their learning goals AND passed their national welding certificate exam!

OTAN: RACHEL Offline - access to learning materials
The Remote Area Community Hotspot for Education and Learning (RACHEL) Offline is a collaborative effort of non-profit organizations to bring the best of technology to those groups that need it most. Do some of your sites have spotty Internet Access? Or maybe you recognize you need to bring the teacher to the learners, and the curriculum as well? RACHEL is a small device loaded with learning materials that you can take with you to remote places. It provides a "closed" network where learners access only the materials loaded on the device through tablets, laptops or smartphones. Come see a demonstration and try it out for yourself!
